Woman and handbags : Unlocking the Mystery

It has always been a mystery to me (and maybe most men too) on the relationship between women and their handbags. Its something men don't really ask their significant other about.

I have my own theory on the relationship of women and handbags. Its an evolutionary trait that is passed from generations since humans were hunters and gatherers. At this period of time, the men go hunting while the womenfolk gathers the fruits and vegetables or any food around their homes. To gather these items, women must have something to store and carry their pickings. Thus, the first handbags were made to fill that need.

Then, as mankind developed, the functionality of handbags evolved. Women who are generally caregivers of the family, when they travel, need more stuff to be put into their handbags. Mothers especially have to bring many things that are needed for the children. Thus, the handbag evolved to become bigger and having more compartments.

Then, mankind discovered make up (cosmetics). The need to carry concealer, lipstick, foundation and a million other things everywhere grew. Unlike men, who are used to carry things in their pockets, women's dresses rarely features pockets as it is too "manly" and inappropriate. Some say that a pocket that is filled is likely to resemble a "bulge" and women hate bulges around their body (as opposed to men). Some women's dresses have "fake" pockets though! Thus, the requirement for a handbag that can carry many things increased with the mode of fashion that was going on back then.

The first modern handbag was created by Thierry Hermes in 1837. The handbag then were marketed as a luxurious good. It became a status symbol. The styles and fashion of handbags have changed through time to accommodate the ever-changing need of women and what they want. Women want more fashionable handbags that can be used as a briefcase, laptop case, baby stuff and also pepper sprays. Thus, lately the size of the average handbag grew.

Like evolution, the handbag grew to many branch of different versions such as the tote, the hobo bag, the saddle shaped, the sling bag, the duffle bag and so on and so forth. The Birkin was named after the English actress, Jane Birkin. She however, stopped using her namesake handbag because it caused her tendonitis. Nevertheless, the Birkin is still being shopped around by the ultra rich and famous, fetching RM 30,000 for a simple one.

As the importance of handbags grew, people begin to take note and different styles of carrying the handbags were observed. "Bagology" describes the psychological trait of a women by the way they carry their handbags. For example, carrying an oversized handbag means the person is a busy bee but is also practical and prepared. Sigmund Freud, the crazy psycho analyser says a handbag is an unconscious example of the vagina.

A handbag reflects much of a woman. It portrays her in very different lights. What she carries inside, how she carries it indicates a lot on what and how a woman is.

Be careful though, a handbag contains more bacteria than the average toilet, says here.
