Looking to the skies, traveling through time

Back then, there was nothing much to look at. Back then, when there was no television, internet, remote controlled toys, gadgets and things to read and watch, people looked up to the skies for much of their lives. People used to see the sky to give them directions, not only for journey and adventures but also to answer the mysteries of the universe.

"Many mythologies have deities especially associated with the sky. The Egyptian god Horus was the god of the Sky.Zeus was the god of the sky and thunder in Greek mythology. The Roman god Jupiter was the god of sky and thunder. Many cultures have drawn constellations between stars in the sky, using them in association with legends and mythology about their deities." - Wikipedia

I am a sky gazer. There is nothing that the sky could not comfort me of, just by appearing in its various forms, from dawn till dusk and then dawn again. The stars, that comes out at night time, seems so elegantly arranged, as if it was twinkling in delight at our existence. The moon which movements affect the rise and fall of tides, in perfect choreography orchestrates our life on earth.

The mystery lies in whether the stars that we see still exists at the time we are watching it or have it already gone dead, only the light of it shining.

"When you look at the stars you are seeing them as they once were. Light travels rapidly—as far as we know, it’s the fastest thing in the Universe—but it’s not infinitely fast. At 300,000 kilometers per second (186,000 miles per second), it takes light more than eight minutes to get from the closest star to Earth; you can think of it as seeing the Sun as it was eight minutes ago. The nearest known star to the Sun is the Alpha Centauri triple-star system, and light takes more than four years to get from there to here." - Slate magazine

Every time we look at the sky, we are traveling back in time, Every time we look at the sun, it is actually the sun that was eight minutes ago. And the moon that we see is 30 seconds earlier than at the time we are seeing it. Because of the large distances that takes space in the Universe, seen from the skies, we seem to forget what we are seeing is actually something that is in the past.

Maybe every time we look up  at the skies, it actually gives us humans hope. That there is life somewhere else out there, that we are not alone. That there is something else beside our ordinary lives here on earth. That there exists something that may be better than here. That one day, we might leave this earth and live somewhere else.

The recent movie that I watched, "Interstellar", tries to unravel some of the mysteries about travel in outer space.

After all, we are just sitting on a pale blue dot.

I think we humans are meant to leave the earth, one day. But before we do that, we must do best to take care of this earth first. That, we did not manage to do to the best of our capabilities, as yet.
