Big Little Things

Humans are always impressed by great, big things. It gives a great sense of accomplishment when someone has a big house, car, have shit loads of money in the bank or a beautiful girl / boy by their side.

Everyone wants to be the next Steve Jobs, Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg. Religiously, everyone wants to do things that the Prophet had achieved, be a mother Theresa to society or live to be everyone's champion like Muhammad Ali.

Now, it's not wrong to have these big goals. It never is wrong to dream to be the greatest that we can be. That, perhaps, should be something that everyone aspires to be. Humans are possibly the only life form that doesn't live up to its full potential because they are able to make choices. Every other living organism will strive to their best ability to get what they can get,be their best in their own sweet world, limited by their brain capacity.

What is wrong is missing the small basic things that we encounter each and every day. Many people look forward to Instagram with a famous artist but forget about their neighbors living just next door or with their relatives who have provided them well when they were younger. Many forget to smile back at strangers or discount the value of a handshake from an old acquaintance. Many more forget their parents who raised them and are more eager to see their heroes who actually know and did nothing about them. A pat on the back from a friend. A caressing touch from a partner. A Hi from a long lost friend. A Facebook Like from a childhood partner in crime. The Thank You from a waitress. The wink from the bus conductor. The "Hi mom/dad" from kids.

Once, people have thought that the brain can be optimised fully, where they say that the brain is only utilised at 30% (although recently that notion have been challenged) . But what about our soul, is our soul currently at the optimum potential? We may miss all these little things that provide fulfillment on our souls and make it not run at its optimum potential.

These so called minor little things can really change someone's day and life, sometimes. But we are too often caught up chasing these big, hugely challenging goals that we sometime lose sight of the small little miracles that happens in front of us. They are probably common but each is a tiny miracle in its own right.

I say there are small miracles because even the smallest thing can have a profound impact in our lives. Chaos theory states that even the flapping of the wings of a butterfly can create a hurricane somewhere far away. Without water drops, there can be no oceans; without steps, there can be no stairs; without little things, there can be no big things. So does these little miracles.

And don't forget that the time that these little miracles happen can actually change the course of history. Any of these little miracles can happen and become a point of divergence where it actually changes the course of history. A choice to actually talk to a person longer to know how he/she is can mean missing the bus and taking an Uber ride where the driver is your future life partner.

Humans tend to believe that the number of evil acts are increasing and there is less and less acts of kindness in this material world. Reality is, kindness is common and evil is something everyone watches out for, that most times, we fail to see the good right in front of our eyes. We fail to see these little miracles that occur. We miss them and then we blame the Universe for not giving us what we want when actually, we are the ones who don't realise it is/was already there, for our taking.
