Hey Mariah, I've Got A Job!

Hi Mariah! I hope you are doing well coming back from your camping stint with other prefects. And I hope you made some if not a few solid friends who will be of good company at school.

On another matter that you have raised last month, when you asked why I haven't got a (proper) job yet, well, have I got news for you. I have a job now and its a very interesting one, too.

My post is called a Content Consultant and I work for MaGIC in Cyberjaya. I actually have a place in the office and I have a nametag!

I write stories for Social Entreprises. Do you know what is a social enterprise? Well, it's actually a business that helps communities and provides them with support to grow themselves. And by communities, it actually refers to groups of people that need help, for example, the hearing impaired, single mothers, kids that missed education and needing a source of income, people who cannot see as well as we can, the environment, the indigenous communities that are in threat of losing their culture and livelihood due to rapid urban migration, the poor, the marginalised, the hurt and the wounded who have no where to go to.

These are the people who needs help, not because they ask, but because that's what humans do to each other, to help each other until they are able to stand and fend for themselves, then they too help others in a never-ending circle of life. Humans are never meant to be alone from each other and we are all gregarious creatures, we need each other and we live to be providing or provided to from one another.

And I am amazed to see the people who do these things. I see people who do this who have no or very little benefit towards themselves and they actually sacrifice their own future for the benefit of the societies they serve.

Social Enterprises have to balance themselves. Because they are businesses, they have to make money. And, because they are Social Enterprise, they have to help the communities or the cause that they upheld. Without the business aspect, they can't find the money to provide the resources and without being socially supportive, they are just another business like any other. And I find this almost similar to lives that people lead.

In life, we need to have meaning. In life, we need to be happy too. Happiness has more to do with having your needs satisfied, getting what you want, and feeling good, whereas meaning is more related to uniquely human activities such as developing a personal identity, expressing the self, and consciously integrating one's past, present, and future experiences.

And so we need to balance these two things.  Finding meaning without being happy is useless. Being happy devoid of any meaning is useless too. So, most of our lives, we should seek a balance between these two critically important aspects.

Well, those are the things I learnt in this one last month of working. Hope you have gained some good insights as well from your camping trip. Take care and have fun!
